History & Origin

What is Cardamom?

Green cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum) is the world's third most expensive spice by weight, native to the evergreen forests of the Western Ghats in Southern India. Known as the “Queen of Spices,” it has been cultivated and traded for over 3,000 years.

India is the world's largest producer of cardamom, with the Cumbum Valley in Tamil Nadu and the Idukki district of Kerala accounting for the majority of production. Our estates in Cumbum have been cultivating premium green cardamom since 1979, across generations of expertise.

Buyer's Guide

How to Identify Quality Cardamom

Not all cardamom is equal. Here's what seasoned buyers look for when evaluating a batch of green cardamom before purchase:

  • 1

    Deep Green Color

Bright, uniform green indicates freshness and proper curing. Yellow or brown pods indicate aging or over-drying.

  • 2

    Full, Heavy Pods

Quality pods feel dense and full — not hollow. Squeeze the pod lightly; it should resist.

  • 3

    Intact Husks

The outer skin should be intact without cracks. Split pods lose moisture and aroma faster.

  • 4

    Strong Aroma

High-quality cardamom has an intense, sweet, eucalyptus-like fragrance. Faint smell = lower oil content.

  • 5

    Uniform Size

In graded cardamom, all pods should be consistent in size. Mixed sizes indicate poor grading.
